I am trying to identify a movie?

It is about an older couple reminiscing about their lives. It seems that when they were younger, they lived in an apartment or community with other young people. One of them may have been an artist. They had other love interests through the years. The older lady asks him, "You loved her didn't you?" He replies, "Why do you want me to tell you something that will hurt you?" I thought it was Henry Fonda or Kevin Kline but I'm not sure. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks!
